Argentina day 9: Cerro Torre and Fitz Roy.

Submitted by maria on Mon, 28/02/2011 - 19:25

It's stopped raining and the sun is up, we're having breakfast at the inn. Our idea was to spend one day climbing up to Poincenot camp to admire the Fitz Roy and another day approaching Laguna Torre to see the Cerro Torre, so we decided to combine a route that joins these two wonders of nature.

We started our trekking by the road that leaves in direction of Cerro Torre. Shortly after we start we have the great luck to see woodpeckers hitting the bark of the trees. They are quite big and remind us of the "crazy bird".

We advance until the viewpoint of Laguna Torre, the views are spectacular.  We continue to the viewpoint of Maestri. The Cerro Torre is covered from time to time with clouds, we are again speechless.

We eat some empanadillas that we have bought in the bakery, delicious. We return to the crossroads marked with the Mother and Daughter trail, two lakes that bring us closer to the Poincenot Camp. Once there we return to Laguna Capri to enjoy the views that the Fitz Roy offers today. Again without words.

The glacier is impressive, the vertical wall only accessible to a few. The mountain is reflected in the water of the lagoon. Totally recommended. We returned to El Chaltén through Camp Madsen.

Tired but happy, our van is waiting for us to return to Calafate. On the way we stop again at the Laguna Viedma viewpoint and we are lucky enough to see an armadillo.
