Indonesia day 6: Gunung Bromo.

Submitted by maria on Thu, 11/06/2015 - 18:01

At 3 a.m. we are picked up by a jeep, old but with a very good point, the bad thing is the smell of diesel. We do the tour from Cemoro Lawang, entering the great crater to climb to a viewpoint in the Gunung Penanjakan in which to see sunrise overlooking the Bromo.

We take a coffee in one of the dozens of posts that are before reaching the viewpoint. It is quite cold. Half an hour before sunrise we go up to take place, there are many people and that is not high season.

It's dawn and the views are spectacular, it's worth the early morning. El Bromo is located in a giant crater called Tengger that reaches 10 kms wide. It is an amazing landscape as if it were a moon, next to the Bromo there are other volcanoes like the Semeru (the roof of Java with 3,676 mts), the Kursi or the Batok.

We return to the jeep and go down to Laotian Pasir to get closer to the base of the Bromo, you have the possibility to do the tour by motorcycle or on horseback but we approach on foot and climb the more than two hundred steps to the mouth of the crater. It is possible to go around the cone but be very careful as the path is quite narrow. Bromo is an active volcano so when you get close you feel the gases drowning you, the smell of sulfur is very intense. The cone is full of offerings that the locals throw inside, it is a sacred peak. Indispensable.
