Submitted by maria on Fri, 01/06/2012 - 17:56

We get up and have breakfast, 1 scrambled egg, two slices of bread, tea or coffee. We take a walk through the day market, stalls of meat, fish, vegetables, fruit ... A man repairs shoes by hand.

At 9 o'clock we enter the Sutera Sanctuary agency and reserve two places to climb Mount Kinabalu. It is not possible to climb without a guide. You can hire one at the entrance of the Kinabalu National Park or at an agency. It's not cheap but it's really worth it. It includes a picnic (boiled eggs, sandwich, banana and water), the Park fee, a guide and accommodation.

We enter the agency next door and hire an excursion to see the big-nosed monkeys that afternoon.

We go to the bus station to buy the ticket for tomorrow to go to Kinabalu Park.

We visit Chinatown and have lunch there. Noodles with chicken and a kind of giant dumpling and a bit of sweet. Very nice.

At 1 pm we are picked up at our accommodation to see the monkeys. We pick up some Japanese and some Australians. It's a two hour drive on a good road. The scenery is beautiful. We arrive at a very nice wooden building with a terrace. We are welcomed with tea, coffee, sticky rice and fried banana, everything was delicious. We get on a boat, they give us a life jacket (they take safety seriously). From a channel we access the river. We are in the middle of the jungle. We see a lot of proboscis monkeys, they are very curious animals, they are endemic to the island of Borneo, they have a huge nose and live in matriarchal societies.

On the shore a rather large monitor lizard. A little further on in a tree a pregnant nose monkey eats mangoes ignoring us, we are very close to her. We see a few more of them a little further away. It's totally worth the experience.

We have no luck with the fireflies, it is too windy and in those conditions you do not see them flying in a group. We go back to the wooden building and they give us dinner. There are some very nice rice sticks that look like lipstick. After dinner we go back to Kota Kinabalu.

We take a walk and arrive again at the market which is next to the sea, at night it changes, there are a lot of food stalls, everything looks great.
