This region in the province of Palencia forms part of the protected area known as the Natural Park of Fuentes Carrionas and Fuente del Cobre, declared a Natural Park in 2000.

Espigüete

This natural area of great ecological value and beauty is located in the foothills of the Cantabrian Mountains. It is the natural home of the Iberian brown bear and capercaillie and other species such as chamois, deer, wolf and griffon vulture, among others.

For mountaineering and nature lovers, it is an essential place to visit and admire. A walk through it allows you to get to know better this remote environment, which is very harsh in winter.

It could be considered the prelude to Picos de Europa due to its proximity and the difficulty of some of its summits.

We would like to make special mention of a very interesting book about routes in the Montaña Palentina written by the mountain guides David Villegas and Vidal Rioja, Ascensiones en la Montaña Palentina, with an infinite number of routes and links to download different access routes to the massifs of Fuentes Carrionas, la Peña, la Pernía, la Braña and la Lora.
