Who hasn't ever imagined themselves on a surfboard riding the waves? This sport, which originated in Hawaii, has spread all over the world. There is no age to get on a board and enjoy the sea.

We leave Burgos and head to the Cantabrian town of Somo, where we will be introduced to surfing.

We have been given a Vip Chest and this is one of the many activities available which includes equipment hire at the Cantabrian Surf School, in Somo.

Somo beach is located in the first Natural Surfing Reserve of Spain. Along with other places like Cadiz or Mundaka, it is one of the Meccas of Spanish surfing.

For the practice of this sport is necessary initially a board, a leash (a rope that attaches the board to the surfer's body) and a wetsuit. Depending on your level there are different types of boards. In specialized stores or companies like the Cantabrian Surf School will inform and advise you depending on your experience.

We tell them that this is our first experience and they tell us that there are five meter waves! They offer us to join a group that starts in an hour and we accept.

We put on our wetsuits and they assign us a board according to our height and inexperience. It's so windy that when we step on the sand I can hardly stand on the board.

The course begins with a brief summary on the practice of this sport, tips and surfing jargon.

We practice the steps and postures on the board in the sand that we will have to do, or at least try to do, in the water. Being attached to the board there is no danger because the board itself serves as a lifeguard.

They insist on respecting your fellow surfers and not trying to catch a wave if you have someone in front of you to avoid accidents.

After about twenty minutes we go into the water, how exciting!

It is difficult but a lot of fun. After an hour and a half in the water and several failed attempts, well at least once we managed to squat on the board, we finished.

We are exhausted but we enjoyed it very much. It's a pity not to have several days to continue practicing.
