Colombia day 3: Villa de Leyva to San Gil.

Submitted by maria on Mon, 10/09/2018 - 19:22

We have breakfast at Casa Gadiel, in Colombia it is usual to have huevos pericos (scrambled eggs with onions and tomatoes), juices and of course tinto (black coffee). All very tasty.

At 10:00 am, our bus leaves in the direction of San Gil, you can go via Tunja or Arcabuco, we recommend this second option because it is less kilometers and we take the tickets.

How to get from Villa de Leyva to San Gil

Before leaving we go into a bakery. They have bread, croissants, buns... Sweet and salty food. Almost all homemade. We buy almojabanas (buns filled with curd, actually it is a very soft cheese). The best ones are the ones from this area.

The road to Arcabuco is actually a road in good condition that crosses a mountainous area of green pastures, the views are incredible. An hour and a quarter later we arrive at our destination, we take a snack while waiting for the next one that will take us to San Gil. Almost 6 hours of travel on a spectacular road between mountains and gorges.

The problem with Colombian roads is that the traffic is very intense and due to the orography it is difficult to find double tracks in each direction, so the journeys are always long.

The bus leaves us at the main terminal outside San Gil. We take a taxi to our accommodation, Madrigal hostel. It is quite central although our room faces one of the busiest crossroads in the city.

San Gil is Colombia's adventure and outdoor sports capital, nestled in a valley surrounded by spectacular mountains. The city itself has some incredibly steep streets. One of the taxi drivers told us that there are often problems, especially with the rain.

We decided to visit the El Gallineral Park. It is a reserve near the river Fonce with native flora, a little piece of jungle in the middle of the city that is worth a visit. It has a pond where you can take a bath.

At nightfall and we go for a walk to the main square, the city is full of life. We have a beer at La Polita, an authentic Colombian bar that is well worth a visit.

We have dinner at the Colombian restaurant El Maná, which is highly recommended. An exquisite menu at an unbeatable price.
