Italy day 4: Milan, Rome.

Submitted by maria on Tue, 04/09/2007 - 13:26

We could not leave Milan without visiting the San Siro Stadium, which changes its name depending on which team is playing, if it is Inter Giuseppe Meazza and San Siro if it is Milan.

After some shopping and another visit to the Duomo, we return by bus to Bergamo Airport to catch a flight to our next destination, the eternal city, Rome.

In barely an hour we arrive in the Italian capital. Rome has two airports, Ciampino and Fiumicino, whether you arrive at Ciampino or Fiumicino there are several options to get to the capital, bus, shuttle bus, train, taxi or private car.

More info here.

From Fiumicino Airport we took a train to Termini Station in the centre of Rome. If you arrive at Ciampino Airport the bus also drops you off here.

Termini Station is Rome's main railway station. The surrounding area is of little tourist interest and is not recommended. Many budget accommodations are located in this area but sometimes cheap is expensive. We will tell you about our experience.

We had a reservation in a hostel with a shared room. When we arrived some people approached us in the street asking about our reservation, as we didn't understand anything, we went up to the first floor where the hostel was located while a man accompanied us. At the door of the hostel there was a sign indicating that it was closed by the carabinieri, the Italian police. At the same time as we were arguing with the man because we had a reservation and no accommodation, a man from another hostel came out of the front door to tell us that the hostel was closed but he seemed to be afraid of his neighbours. In the meantime, they try to convince us to split into two groups to take us somewhere else. We are suspicious and tell them to give us our money back and that we are not going to split up. Finally they point us to possible accommodation near Piazza Cavour where we go on our own.

When we return to the street, we see people warming their hands on metal buckets. We get to the metro and they close in our faces because of building work. We go to the bus stop and it turns out that you can't pay in cash and as it's nine o'clock at night there's no option to buy a card.

A guy comes up to us and tells us not to worry, he tells us to get on the bus. In the end we get on and see a sign that says 300€ fine per person if the ticket is not paid, finally the driver doesn't tell us anything. Thank goodness.

We get off the bus and go to the place where the man with another accommodation is waiting for us. Evidently there is nobody there and nobody arrives, so we go into a seafood restaurant where a very kind woman puts us in touch with a nearby hostel that we could not afford but in view of our situation she gives us a discount on the price of what has turned out to be the best accommodation of our trip, Marta Guest House, in via Tacito. As a thank you we have recommended this accommodation to everyone we know who has visited Rome. The woman was a sweetheart and we were very grateful.
